John Huddleston’s photographs are primarily landscapes, but what he sees when he looks at land, earth, and sky is informed by a variety of texts, and these are seldom what his viewers might imagine on their own when they first confront his pictures. As seen in the images included here, Huddleston’s landscapes signify volumes. Alchemical Reconnaissance, with its serene and tranquil views of Vermont, incorporates texts relating aspects of high energy physics. The peaceful visions of Mechanicsville, Virginia, and Antietam shown here are part of his Civil War remembrance called Killing Fields. Lately Huddleston has taken to the woods around his home in nearby Weybridge, where he constructs sculptures made from transient materials.
